| Those who live in poverty in rural areas are in just as much need as those living in public housing in the inner city. Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties all share a sense of community. Most people don’t think about the people in the rural areas because they don’t see them when they drive to work or to the store. THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY DON’T EXIST . Populations in rural communities are more likely to be chronically or long term poor than poverty populations in urban areas. Extreme age - the elderly and young children - is a characteristic associated with rural poverty which is also associated with poverty in urban centers, one third of those who live in poverty in the south live in rural areas (OSU Ext.). The tri-county area is not all city streets and developed neighborhoods. The Charleston Expression cares about all of the people in the tri-county area and not just those we see on the streets. It is harder for these people to get the help they need because they live farther away from the resources available to help them. We need your help. Please pray for us, your prayers are very important. Volunteers are always needed and of course donations of any kind are greatly appreciated. |
