“Workin’ for a Livin’” outreach Began in July of 2005. We believe it is imperative to help people get the quality job they need to get out of poverty. You can give someone food for the rest of their life and it will not help them or their family get out of poverty. According to the latest statistics by the Post and Courier a person must make at least $12.00 per hour to have the basic necessities of life in Charleston County. This includes a two bedroom apt, adequate transportation and food to eat. This is what it takes to make it without government assistance. We believe that by helping people get jobs that pay more than minimum wage we help them restore their dignity. We know that in areas of high poverty and high unemployment it is an empowering feeling to get a full time job that pays enough to support yourself. A lot of the people we work with are long term unemployed or have just been working at temp services and do not have long term employment experience. Most of them do not have a real idea what a 401k plan is or a real concept of saving for retirement. We try to help them understand that working a 40 hour work week is part of normal society. In addition to helping people find work we also help people with interviewing skills, basic work requirements including showing up on time, appropriate attire, chain of command and other information. We do our best to help them succeed and not set them up for failure. We give lots of encouragement and guidance to help them achieve independence and self-sufficiency. We cannot do it without your help. Please pray for us, your prayers are needed and very important. We’re always looking for volunteers and of course donations of any kind are greatly appreciated. If you have job openings of any kind please notify Clara Fenton |
